Roland Juno Series

These are a series of middle priced synths that have played a large role in dance music. They are all polyphonic mono timbrel synths. They have a similar architecture to the sh-101 in that they have a single oscillator per voice with an optional sub oscillator. The Junos where 6 note polyphonic. They all have built in chorus that is notoriously noisy.  These synths don't have many parameters by modern standards, I have worked with keyboard players that have used the Juno-6 without patch memory and simply have the patches memorized and program them between the songs during the gig.

Juno-60

The Juno 60 has no midi without a DCB (Digital Control Bus)  to midi converter. The Juno-60 has an optional step time DCB sequencerJSQ-60. The Juno-60 had 76 patches. By pressing down nr 5 and 1 or 2, at the same time, you get access to patch 57 to 76.

Juno-6

The Juno 6 has no patch memory or DCB and was the cheaper cousin of the juno-60. Lots of my friends had  this synth, it was the cheapest commonly available polyphonic synth for a while.

Juno-106

The first Juno with midi was the Juno-106 this did not have as punchy or bright a sound as its predecessors. The Juno-106 also has an increased patch memory storage with 128 patches instead of 56.

Alpha Juno-1

The alpha series brought an end to the knob interface. They had 64 user patches and 64 presets. The alpha series had an alpha dial that made the parameters accessible via a large dial that replaced the rows of knobs. This dial could also modify the sound in real time like a control synth. The alpha series had an optional external programmer with knobs called the PG-300. The Alpha 1 had a 4 octave keyboard.

Alpha Juno-2

The Alpha Juno 2 had a 61 note keyboard with velocity and aftertouch and an external memory cartridge slot.

MKS-50

A 1U 19 inch rack unit of the Alpha Juno 2 called the MKS-50. More parameters storable with the patch and a 16 chord memory.

Sounds

Renowned for their great bright fat real analogue sounds. Many dance sounds like the Hoover, Reese and Mentasm are made with this series of synths. Makes real fat warm true analogue lead sounds the older the model the more analogue it sounds. And just add water rave sounds if you use the pitch bend. Lots of drum and bass sounds can be made with this range of synths, for example that wide dark wobbeling bass growl that is the bread and butter of many an old school tune.

Hoover patch for juno series

Here is a patch that I leeched off a west Australian Hoover site that appears to be gone. Thats the great thing about leaching stuff, its up to you weather it disappears or not.

A SIMPLE HOOVER SETTING WITH AN "OLD SCHOOL" FLAVOUR. ALL HOOVER POSSIBILTIES CAN BE ACHEIVED FROM THIS PATCH . (you do need to do somethings for yourself...go figure, we did!) TRY CHANGING ONE PARAMETER AT A TIME TO GET THE SOUND THAT YOUR AFTER. TWEAK YOUR MIXERS TREBLE TO GET THE SOUND NICE & BRIGHT AS THE CHORUS ON THIS MACHINE IS QUITE DIRTY!. PROGRAMMED ON A JUNO 1 BY RUDEBOY ... BEGINNERS PATCH!!!!!.

Relations

More expensive polyphonic descendants of the sh-101 and mc-303, cheaper versions of the Jupiter 6 and Jupiter 8.

Pro

  • Not many parameters, you can program one quickly

  • Bright analogue sounds.

  • Can make many classic dance sounds.

  • Not too expensive on the second hand market.

Con

  • Must be tuned.

  • Mono timbrel.

  • The chorus is noisy.

  • Has a limited range of sounds it can produce compared to more modern synths.

  • The Juno 60 requires a DCB to midi converter to sequence. The Juno 6 dose not have this option, (the others have midi).
