Roland D-110

This is a multi-timbrel rack version of LA technology released after flagship LA synth D-50 and the mt-32.  This is kind of like a professional version of the MT-32, it has onboard editing.

Fedor Thönnessen There is an external programming device named PG-10, with sliders and knobs and all, which makes editing it a LOT easier, and I was so lucky to get one...Fedor Thönnessen

The PG-10 is the hands on controller for the D5, D10, D20 synths and the D110 module. The GR50 guitar synth also uses this programmer. The PG-10 is a hot item on e-bay and second hand markets. Some people won't touch these devices without one.  I have not got one because it commonly sells for more than the D-110, which probably indicates that the D-110 is a real bargain wrather than that the PG-10 is overpriced.

Cutoff Midi Controller Message

*wires*  Does anyone have any idea if it's possible to control the cutoff  frequency of the filter on the D-110 in realtime? I'd like to be able to do filter sweeps etc that aren't necessarily done using the TVF. Also, is there any sort of portamento/slide function available on the unit? Any help would be appreciated :)

treason No, there is no direct method of modifying the cuttoff or resonance in real time. I presume the above mentioned PG-10 can modify these parameters as a sequence is running. I have worked extensively with the mt-32 and I got these effects by controlling the TVF Velo for each patch and using velocity data of the sequence to simulated real time controller events. The D-110 dosen't recieve midi cuttoff messages ither, so that rules out generic midi controllers. The polly 800 can be modified by mounting internal trimpots on the front pannel, but I have not seen any mods for the d-110 that can do anything simmilar. Same story with the portameno, there is none,  but I have simulated portamento effects using pitch bends. You can create something approximating a tb-303 with a d-110 but you have to be resourcefull.

Kristofer Ulfves tb-303 patches for the d-110

Here are some patches for the d-110 that emulate the tb-303. I have tryed them out, They are pretty bloody good. I got them off a tb-303 site. Kristofer Ulfves I have some old 303-ish sounds made by me a few years ago on my old D20.  I also have a little psy-trance project, Scalectric. Check it out if you want. Sounds

It can make some very wickid res bleeps and buzzes if you know how to program it. Dose a great "drum and bass" square bass sound. Lots of D-50 MT-32 style sounds. Bell and electric pianos. Atmospheric sampler like pads. D-50 style strings. Has a pretty good version of that sampled slap bass that was so popular in the late 80. The acoustic and fretless bass sounds are also serviceable. The acoustic piano is fairly unrealistic... well lets face it its crap, but it dose a characteristic bell electric piano that is used in lots of R+B stuff of the early 90's. If you use the ring mod on the saw wave it can create some ripping rave sounds a little reminiscent of some of the harder FM sounds. Has some ok big beat style rock snares and kick drums. I have found a timber called "Hard Cross" from Kristofer Ulfves tb-303 patches for the d-110 that is a cross mod sound that sound almost exactly like the bass in Angles by Subject 13 I have sweetened it with some wide analogue saw tooth stuff from the Poly 800 to make a real fat mean sound.

Relations

It can be considered to be a rack version of the D-10, D-20 and to a lesser extent the  MT-32, you could also consider it a cut down multi-timbrel rack version of a D-50 if you wanted to.

Editors-librarians

SOUNDIVER

Fedor Thönnessen

I was advised on the COMPUTER MUSIC forum (which I highly recommend, as well as a look on an issue of the mag itself!) to turn to e-magic's SOUNDIVER, which is an editor interface for about any instrument you can think of, and gets high praises. Only problem: it's NOT free, as opposed to LA-synth and its alikes.

LA Synth

I have used this a little, it has lots of functions but I find the user interface a bit unintuitive. Apart from the basic LA-Synth support for MT-32, LAPC-1, CM-32L, CM-64 and GR-50 this newer version also supports the D-110. The LA Synth Editor and Librarian for Windows is share ware and available from ginosoft. Watch out for this site because it has a midi file that fires off when you open the page (can give you a shock if you have your midi volume too high). It used to have a read good version of escapade by Janet Jackson it now has the theme to "Thunderbirds are go!".

Windows Midi Watch

This is my favourite LA editor apart from the editor I had for my mt-32 that was integrated into my Atari Dr. T sequencer. It appears to be based on the midi monitor out of the multi media section of the windows SDK but don't be fooled, there are many new dialogs in the Sysex  and D-110 menu. I have used it as my D-110 librarian for a while now. It has a great feature where you can open a syx format file and scroll through the individual timbers with the option to send them to the D-110 current timber buffer for auditioning under Sysex, View Sysex File.  Windows Midi Watch is programmed by Andrew Sharpe  is available for free download from harmony-central.

Pro

  • 2 Stereo and 6 separate Outs.

  • Has a reverb/echo unit.

  • Compared to the MT-32 it is robust in its construction.

  • Has an internal power supply.

  • Remembers its settings when the power turns off without expensive third party mods.

  • Makes the MT-32's drum sounds sound like someone beating a broken drumstick against a card board box.

Con

  • Like all LA units it can't apply the filters to the sample section of the tone.

  • Has no orchestral hit wave form unlike its cheaper cousin the MT-32.

  • Can't do real piano to save its life.

  • If you are looking for accurate copy of a PROPHET 5 analogue your in the wrong place.

Download

I have a PDF of the D-110 Manual in English as a set of  WinRAR files (its 20 megs) which is why I can't upload it to the LUGNUTS user group, You will need a copy of WinRAR to dearchive it and of course Acrobat to read it.  According to Daniel Muhr you need winrar 3.00 or greater. (Daniel Muhrs Prism Sound Laboratories). I have decreased the maximum size of the files to 723 k to make a timeout during a long file download less likely. The manual was just scanned in and pdfed, if you have something that can strip the images out of a PDF or something that can optimize a pdf let me know (treason) and Ill apply it to the manual to make the download less of a hassle.
