Dance music production terms

Compression

Compression is a treatment of a signal that controls the volume of the signal over time. This is commonly referred to as manipulating the dynamics of a track. It is used on vocals to keep the volume constant, giving the vocalist the freedom to change how hard or soft they sing things without having to worry about wether the recording is to soft or distorted. It is used on drums to make them punchier particularly kick drums in dance music. It is used on guitar to add sustain or give the guitar a smoother sound. It can also be used on a guitar to remove the attack section of the guitar note and give it a synth like effect. When tracks are mastered or broadcast by a radio station it is used to keep the song volume constant so that there aren't any parts of it that are too soft or distort. There are many types of compressors digital valve soft knee and hard knee. The valve type can be very expensive you can send your track to a mastering studio and pay mega bucks just to have your track go through their array of gadgets.

Hoovers

This is an analogue patch used in hard core,  rave and Nu-Nrg, originally from a Juno patch using a pulse wave. Its an analogue stack sound,  the original juno alpha 2 sound has a descending pitch bend at the end.  hard NRG: A hover is Patch-86 - "What The..." on a Juno alpha 2. End Quote.  I have seen posts that suggest its also a preset on  the rack version of the Juno alpha 2 the MKS-50. I also have a  parameter listing of how to program hoovers on the older Juno's Hoover patch for juno series

.

Here are some other hovers that I found on the  UltraMaster Juno-6 site.

Mentasm

A higher pitched version of the Hoover used in many early Metalheadz productions. Can be heard in 'Bodyrock'.

Oliver Gil : Mentasm comes from Joey Beltram's track of the same name,  released on R&S in the early nineties a TUNE if ever I've heard one, he went by the name of "second phase" for that track when it was originally released. End quote.

This is a link to a sample of a Mentasm that I got of dogs on acid but it" times out".

Reese

Oliver Gil : Reese Hoover sound comes from the DEEEEEEEEEP bass used by Kevin Saunderson under the name of Reese its on 'reese tunnel mix' of "pennies from heaven" by Inner City (a really anthemic hands in the air house track from the early nineties). End quote. This is a link to a sample of a Reese that I got of dogs on acid but it" times out".

Sine Wave Bass

As a default many Akai samplers load a sign wave into their sample buffers until you put your own sample into them. Rave and Jungle artists found this an interesting bass if played in the lower register, there are many variations of this using chorus doubting and distortion to add some extra overtones.

Drop

This is the hook of the tune, the bit where if you have done your job, everyone will be going wild or at least bouncing. This is the part where the bass kicks in and you have your most complex and compelling rhythmical ideas present.

Breakdown

This is a section or sections of the tune where the rhythmical elements of the more complex sections are played by themselves. The breakdown gives the dancers a chance to take a breath and appreciate parts of you composition that don't get as much prominence in the drop. The breakdown evolved from  the drum solo section of R+B / Hip hop tracks. In Drum and Bass the breakdown can be  extended and used multiple times. The breakdown can be used to create an expectation before the drop.

Two Drop Form

The 2 drop form is an arrangement of a drum and bass track where there are 2 usually slightly different version of the drop separated by a reload. The second drop is usually a bit shorter to prevent people getting drop fatigue.
